Stackz - Solved Issues / Re: Can't Install Stackz 7.0 Dictionary Edition
« on: August 12, 2008, 07:12:22 PM »
Sorry for the late reply! It installs perfectly and program runs without prolems.
Great stuff!

Well it didn't solve the problem for me.
The version 3.1 that was linked won't install on my vista 64bit edition. I updated to the latest version for vista (4.5) but unfotunately the error still occurs. :/
I fear that the persons that have problems installing didn't have them because their version of installer was too old (everybody with xp with servicepacks should have 3.1 already) but rather because they have a 4.x version installed - which might be the cause of that problem. Unfortunately vista and 2008 server refuse to install 3.1 and therefore the error is more likely to occur - or maybe even occurs all the time? Any vista users that have successfully stackz v7?

You are so right, this would be really great.

Stackz Flashcard Organizer for PC / Re: Stackz and Windows Vista
« on: January 28, 2007, 09:59:33 PM »
Tested on Vista RC2, my old folder did not work, but this was (most likely) due to write protection issues. When I copy and pasted the folder to the new program files folder (which had a new name for my foreign language computer) it worked flawlessly.
So in worst case scenario you have to reinstall, however it DOES work.

Changing font size? You can change the font size of everything in stackz...

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Change to mark right/wrong
« on: July 06, 2006, 07:25:17 PM »
Firstoff, I know that this is a huge and probably useless one but I thought I could as well give an idea what can still be improved.
Okay, I am aware of the fact that it might not be the smartest idea to have like 7000 cards in one stack...but I still like it like that. Random reviewing without seperation is just the best for me.
But stacks is getting slower and slower in testing mark a card as known or unknown takes like 5 seconds on my machine. Maybe I'm an idiot but I think that this needn't be. After all it does not need to rewrite every sub-stack just because I answered one card. Sure this might be useful for people who want the graphic of the stacks to be updated after every card...but an option to update the stacks after more entries and doing it in the background might make it better. I mean it should be possible to instead of rewriting the two stacks that are influenced by answer, which I assume is what is wasting most performance atm, to just make a small memory area where it stores what is to go to which stack eventually and then when it has spare performance do it or do it more infrequently on larger stacks, or maybe some other way.

Well I don't have PS but a delete feature would also be nice in the normal version of stackz. Well for the time being just copy and paste it somewhere or write it down. Easier than searching for it manually.

General Discussion / Re: Do you still use paper flashcards?
« on: June 07, 2006, 05:00:03 PM »
And you would glue them together or what? I suggest against gluing things together to carry around...
Maybe a bit thicker paper but without gluing it together would work better.
Well this would of course also require larger changes with resinerting the paper for the answers to be printed them (of course a certain way of inserting them would be necessary).

Stackz - Solved Issues / Re: First lines of a card not displayed

First, I don't use a Japanese version of windows...after all in windows xp that would be pointless.
In order to assure that all Japanese programs run normally I have set everything to Japanese in the region&language settings. This must have caused the font names to become Japanese.
Secondly, I of course use the 2006 version. I am well aware that reporting stuff for old versions is perfectly pointless.
As for the font are right. If i change the font while testing from those options it applies the changes immediately. Whereas if I close the testing/learning dialog and then change it by going to
dictionaries-->setup-->(language) change and change the font here and then open a new testing dialog then the change is not applied.

I'm usually using HGP行書体 size 24.
In this example however it was HGP明朝B, happened to both.

Due to your hint I just did following experiments:
MS ゴシック* 24  still happens
MS ゴシック 12  still happens...actually does the text size even matter? It resizes the text on its own in test/learning mode.
MS 明朝* 12 still happens.
(those are gothic and minchou in japanese)

Of course I changed the font and then closed and reloaded the file in order to make the changes apply.
(on a sidenote: how about a little popup that tells you something like  'You have to reopen all active files which use that language for the changes to apply' (best would be with a checkbox, 'do not display this dialog again') this could help users. Perfectly unimportant, just saying there is room for improvements)
Back to the main topic...a file that shows this behavior? No problem. This I don't really know your E-Mail address I took the liberty of uploading it at rapidshare. I'm terribly sorry to cause an inconvenience, but it should not too bad since files of that size do not have a wait time (I think).
(Note the defitions are, if not marked otherwise, taken from koujien fifth version and are of the author? Anyways just wanting to point out for legal reasons that there are small parts of this product contained)
To reproduce just go into testing/learning mode, wait till you find an entry with multiple subpoint (which are...most of them?) and resize a will encounter disappearing lines. That is at least how it's here.

Thank you for your effords...and good luck with this one. If you cannot reproduce or fix it...then never mind.

Stackz - Solved Issues / First lines of a card not displayed
« on: May 20, 2006, 11:10:30 PM »
I've been hesitating to write this as it is probably already known...or maybe a lot to do to change.
I'd be surprised if it's not known yet...except if there is something that makes me a special victim of it.

Whole lines of an entry are not displayed unless I resize the testing/learning window.

Before resize

After resize

Fortunately if I press the edit button I can, as there is a scroll bar, always find out if stackz has eaten an entry without 'searching' for it by resizing the window randomly until the entry comes out.

I'm already used to it...but it's still one of the most annoying things there is in stackz.
Each card needs another size to display all entries.
Do I need to mention that this is annoying? Resizing and resizing every time for every single card...except for those that only have one line.
It's really a miracle I've gotten used to it...

I think...if it's possible that a scroll bar appears if the edit button is pressed when it doesn't fit...wouldn't it be also possible to show this bar if not the whole entry of the card isn't shown outside the edit mode?
Well perfect would of course be if this didn't occur at all...though the above suggestion would of course suffice.

Stackz - Solved Issues / Find duplicates acting strange
« on: May 14, 2006, 01:16:48 PM »
The find duplicate button is showing...rather strange behavior.

Example: I chose to edit all entries in all lessons that are 'unknown' or 'bad'

The search duplicates button is not available. Seems like there are no duplicates. But that is not true. Then I let stackz sort it, with reading as criteria. No change in the button.
But now I scroll down and find my 蝦, which I added twice on purpose.

No change in the button. Now I change the sorting by clicking on Entry.
And see there, it becomes available.

Now I click it...and yeah! It worked.

Um...but this is quite strange. I only happened to find out that it works like this by accident. Maybe this should be...changed a bit?
For example by making it work regardless of the sorting...or instead of graying the button out make it automatically sort for entry and then perform the duplicate search.
If that all is impossible then a note at the mouseover that you have to click entry first would probably help the users.

General Discussion / Re: What do you learn with Stackz?
« on: April 17, 2006, 01:39:11 AM »
Well it would certainly be useful considering the many fishes and plants there are.
鯛 鯉 鰹 鮑 鱒 鰆 鱚 鱈 鮃 鮹 鯒 鰰 鰤 and so on...without a picture one might be able to learn the names of those fishes in one's native language...which doesn't mean you would necessarily actually recognize that fish. Same goes for all the trees...However, maybe learning what those 'actual things' are is not anymore within the realm of what stackz is supposed to do.

hmmm... I suggest you rather delete it right away  :)
善を責むるは朋友の道也! (孟子離婁下)

Thanks for the info!  Now all I have to do is figure out which phonetic alphabet to use... <smile>
In case you still care about it and don't just want to get rid of it then use the international one. There is an explanation at . If you master it you can (with a good dictionary) read words of many languages neatly without even knowing the language. It is really useful, if you do not take lessons that teach you pronunciation it is necessary as even if you go to this country, if you speak too 'strange' they won't listen to you. So don't let bad habits or assumptions degenerate your pronouncation, learn it at the beginning, once you have a very good feel for the language you might be able to skip it, but until then I deem it essential (if you ever intend to converse in this language). Well at least I had quite a bit of success with it in all four languages that I am capable of.

General Discussion / Re: "Reading" attribute?
« on: March 25, 2006, 10:03:15 PM »
How about phonetic spelling? That is important as well. Knowing the pronounciation for words is important, and it is not always completely obvious even in western languages.
edit: You might have to learn the international phonetic alphabet first. But it's worth the effort.
