General Discussion / Re: Study on the go, with ipod touch/iphone
« on: July 17, 2008, 10:07:48 PM »
I strongly agree - the iPhone and iPod Touch are the future of consumer electronics.  Apple is the first to bring mobile computing to the masses by reinventing the PDA as a consumer entertainment device.  Meanwhile, Palm is all but dead, and Windows Mobile will probably never be more than a niche platform in standalone PDAs and high-end smartphones.

I work as a technical adviser to language departments at my University.  The ability to carry thousands of flashcards in your pocket in electronic format - and study whenever you want - is a huge benefit for language learners.  And Stackz fills this need better than any other program I've seen.  Right now, unfortunately, students can only use mobile Stackz if they buy a PDA, which can be expensive as well as inconvenient to carry around (and kind of nerdy).  College students these days are much more likely to spend their money on an iPod or iPhone.

Of course, we can't expect the developers to make a version of Stackz for every platform.  However, the iPhone/iPod is the biggest potential growth area for Stackz at the moment.  Not only are they popular among students, but Apple also has a strong presence in educational markets, which could translate into more sales of Stackz.  If an iPod/iPhone version came out, I wouldn't hesitate to push for its adoption at my university.

PocketStackz / Re: Stackz for Windows Mobile Smartphone?

Windows Mobile for Smartphone is a separate operating system from Windows Mobile.  Both are derived from Windows CE, so they're closely related.  However, the user interface is different.  For example, the Smartphone version is written for devices without a touch screen, so its programs have to be navigable using only keys (as opposed to using a stylus).

Right now, Stackz is only available for Windows Mobile, not Windows Mobile for Smartphones.  However, given that the two operating systems are essentially the same under the hood, I'm hoping that a port might not be far away.  Maybe?  :)

PocketStackz / Stackz for Windows Mobile Smartphone?

Any chance that we'll see a version of Stackz for Windows Mobile Smartphone in the not-too-distant future?  I ask because there are some really nice Smartphone models coming out in the next few months (like this one  It would be great to have Stackz on a device that's slim enough to fit in your pocket - in fact, it's really the only thing that's keeping me from replacing my iPaq with a smartphone. 8)
