Stackz - Solved Issues / Example Sentences
« on: April 16, 2006, 06:55:10 PM »
Japanese example sentences?  Great idea!

I've been looking for a Japanese dictionary program that has example sentences, since half the time you can't really know what the meaning is from the English translation since something gets lost in the middle.  I like Jim Breen's online dictionary for this reason, but you have to be online.  AOTS Practical Dictionary is probably the best dictionary around when it comes to example sentences.  The problem is that it isn't electronic and it is all romaji.

Anyhow, I'd love to see an example sentence database built into Stackz, especially the Japanese dictionary.  The Tanaka Corpus is probably an excellent starting place (although there is the occassional odd sentence in there).  I hear that Eijiro is not bad when it comes to examples, although Eijiro is not freeware.  I wonder if there would be any interest in allowing Eijoro integration into the Stackz dictionary?

The ABSOLUTE BEST Japanese IME for mobile devices is a little known program called Decuma Japanese.  With Decuma, you just copy down what you see (correct stroke order helps but isn't required) and it turns it into Japanese for you.  It is very fast, very accurate, and you can use it on non-Japanese PPCs (Palm version also available).

It is much better than the built-in IMEs, even better than that of a native Japanese PPC, IMHO.  The one problem is that getting the Japanese version is a little difficult - I had to have the help of a Japanese friend to purchase it since its only through an all Japanese site - and navigating the order system was impossible for me.  But here are the links:

A program that I've had god luck with as a dictionary on the PPC is by Ectaco.  It isn't too big and it runs pretty quick.  It does not have all the words that Jim Breem's dictionary and others, but it has most everything I look up.  It comes with an IME so that you can use Japanese input (multiple input options, like kana or romaji conversion).  This is the IME that I use when I want a keyboard for input rather than Decuma's handwriting recognition.

Stackz - Solved Issues / & changed to _

In all of my questions/answers, the "&" character is replaced with the "_" character when they are displayed in a test dialog.  However, the character still shows up as "&" if I enter card edit mode.  Using English as the specified field language.

General Discussion / Re: What ColorMode do you use the most?

I think that I occassionaly use all of them...  just because I like the different colors!  I think Stackz is definitely the best looking flashcard app out there for the Pocket PC.  I probably am using Failure Count the most these days.  :)

Stackz - Solved Issues / Re: Import Limitation
« on: April 16, 2006, 03:11:47 AM »
At first I thought this was a limitation in the number of lines, but it turns out that I was just importing incorrectly.  I was only importing two fields (question and answer) and I was setting the third token to N/A but didn't realize that I needed to click on the Token 2 button to get Token 3 to go away.  Looks like it works OK afterall.

Not really sure if this is my fault or the program's fault, but when I try to copy a very large number of lines to the list import wizart (around 700 or so), it gets cut off at around line 132.? I got around this by importing from a file instead, but just thought I'd mention it.? Thanks!

PS - I wish you'd change the title of this folder - I almost feel guilty posting here because I don't want to sound like I'm complaining!  Perhaps, "Limitations You'de Like Improved"?

General Discussion / Importing Into Lessons - Is there a way?
« on: April 11, 2006, 04:39:26 AM »
I have an excel file that is several thousand items long.? I want to import it into stacks, but into manageable lessons.? ?Is there any way to do it with the current setup of stackz or will I just have to do this manually?? I have a field in the original file named "Lesson" that could be used to group the similar cards together.? Thanks for your advice!
