General Discussion / Just purchased an iPhone
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:17:59 AM »
I finally did it, I just couldn't keep with my pocket PC anymore and got the iPhone. unfortunately my Japanese studying just ground to a halt.

Please, Please, Please, make an iphone version. Stackz is truly superior to the other flash card apps out there (lingvosoft and declan) I'm sure the exposure that the itunes application store can give you would be enough to make this app the standard.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Re: New features
« on: February 17, 2008, 02:25:56 AM »
I can't think of any new features but definately some shortcuts would be nice.  usually, when I go through a new word list. I go through each lesson and create a parallel lesseon that contains the kanji in it. at the end of the entire word list, I will then do the same for all the word lists combined so I can get a single stack with all the kanji characters that I've learnt.

The way it is now, I have to open the edit list, select all the words, add to text pad, get kanji info, close the other dialogs, then add all the characters to the selected stack. It would be great if this was a single button to get kanji info on all the selected stacks without having to go through edit and text pad.

also, there is a bug that happens if I try and copy more than 100 kanji from the kanji info dialog to the selected stack. this makes it pretty tedious to copy smaller batches of characters at a time.

I do have some improvements for pocket stackz though.

configurable test buttons. the up down right and left buttons are a great idea but some phones have really lame control stick (like mine). I cannot for the life of me, hit right and except it to promote the card to the next stack. it would be awesome to configure buttons so you could assign the shoulder buttons to pass or fail and assign the control stick (any direction) to uncovering the next hint.

a real exit button - for some reason my phone (most likely some others) has problems with the font if I leave it open for a period of time. The fonts come out as empty boxes and the only way to fix it is to soft reset the phone. the only way I can fix this is to go to system, memory, and close the app manually which is a pain. A real exit button on the left shoulder menu would be awesome.

random cards in test mode. sometimes I like the fact that the hardest words come first, but most of the time I want to increase the challenge and test in a random way so hard and easy words are mixed together.

Things that aren't interesting to me

audio - this seems like it would slow down the learning of a big stack of words. if I am really stumped on the pronounciation I can google the word and get it. Also, it would seem almost impossible to verify the accuracy and quality of audio files for all the words in the available word lists.

test tool requiring types answers - this would slow down learning as well. If you do add this, please make it optional for test mode. Using the honor system is perfect.

I think the iphone sdk is coming out later this month. I would honestly pay double for stackz on an iphone because it's the only thing preventing me from moving to it.

Stackz Platform interaction / iPhone

Any thoughts about creating a version for the iPhone? Not sure how easy is it to get their developer sdk or create some kind of web based version of stackz that could be used through their browser but I think this is the only reason why I don't ditch my xv6700 and get an iPhone. I don't think I could do without a good flash card program.

Stackz Flashcard Organizer for PC / Re: Word lists seem too long
« on: January 03, 2008, 03:46:14 AM »
by the way, those Joyo Kanji lists are pretty ambitious. They do not reflect the normal number of words in each list. I would start off with a kanji in context list, or go through and weed out some words from the Joyo lists. Those lists are basically all the Joyo Kanji, in order, with all the common use words for each kanji. you'll spend a year learning all the words for the first 300 kanji that way. learning all ~2000 standard kanji with 3-5 sample uses each is probably a little more doable.

by the way, as far as word count goes, 50 is probably a good place to start but if you push yourself, you can go up to 100 or more per list.

I tried to port this a few days ago but something happened and it didnt make it. It says it cannot access the upload path. anyone have any ideas?

Anyway, there are two paragraphs missing from this wordlist from Breaking into Japanese Literature.

I noticed that in a grove and the nose do not have word lists yet. if anyone wants to help me work on these, let me know. I'm just making the transition to learning kanji and this has been a pretty cool way to start rather than just remembering the JOYO kanji in order.

The Stackz Wordlists / Re: What wordlist is missing most?
« on: December 31, 2007, 03:31:54 AM »
Actually, any kanji or words lists that is taken directly from a story or manga would be awesome. The breaking into japanese liturature work lists are really cool. It's nice to be able to immediately apply the new vocabulary by reading something that makes use of them.

I just updated the first night list because the last page was not in the szm file. I will post it in the word list topic.

PocketStackz / font bug
« on: December 30, 2007, 05:15:33 AM »
Is there anyway you can implement an exit command in the menu?   Right now, if my device goes into sleep mode with stackz running in the background, the fonts dont show up properly until I do a hard reset (they all show up as squares).

Now, everytime I think I will take a couple minute break from stackz, I have to go through system/memory/running programs to close it out or have to suffer the long boot process in order to resume with working fonts.

I guess fixing the bug would be the best option but I'm not sure if this is an actual bug or a side effect of wm5, lingvosoft had the same problem whenever it used a font from the memory card, I dont think it gets closed out properly in sleep mode.

Hello, I have a suggestion. What about a random mode like in the desktop version. It's a drag to always have the cards sorted by the current color mode.

or even a way to take all the cards in the known stack and move them to the middle stack without effecting their success rate. one great thing about having them start in the middle, is all the cards that you've tried get moved to the right or left stack and if you need to quit early, you can resume the stack in the middle without having to retry the entire lesson. when the cards all start in known, the cards you get correct still stay in the same stack that you are testing.

Outside of a couple of small bugs, the funcionality of stackz is incredible! I have been using lingosoft for 2 years now and I thought it would be hard to replace it but Stackz gives me all the tools I need, like being able to sort based on success, create new lessons with all the individual kanji characters from another lesson, and be able to create new lists from my most difficult words. Congratulations! You created one hell of an app!

ok, I got it working, it turned out that after I installed 2007, it created a empty fonts folder on the memory stick and the japanese fonts were broken until I copied my own version of msgothic into it, both 2006 and 2007 work now.

I wonder why the install refused to copy new fonts even after reinstalling 2006?
