What I like about this method is simply only having to hit one button (F6) for the examples to display when the test window is open.

However, as pointed out it is not optimized, so for example, the results don't consider all the possible verb conjugations

The dictionary file method doesn't appear to function with 07Alpha on my machine.

Stackz - New Feature Requests / Example Sentence Integration
« on: October 17, 2006, 05:02:15 AM »
This is truely great news!

So glad you've heard the users' requests for example sentence integration.
Jim Breen's dictionary now links all entries to the ALC database so this may be another possiblity.
I use both the Tanaka Corpus and ALC daily.  Both are huge databases that are very helpful and useful.
I'm surprised more developers have not recognized the tremendous potential of utilizing them.

Awesome idea!

Next to adding example sentence support, this is the best idea I've yet to read.

This is actually one of my main uses for the Stackz program.? I spend a lot of time at Japanese forum and BBS sites, and whenever someone types a word I don't know, I do an auto-paste into the dictionary, and from there add it to my vocabulary lists for future study.? Having a browser plugin like rikaichan to automate the process would be ideal.

Very excellent idea!

The Stackz Wordlists / Re: Kanji Study Set
« on: June 13, 2006, 08:50:30 AM »
I've uploaded here, the first two volumes of the set.
The kanji lessons are numbered according to Spahn And Hadamitzky.

Currently I have the complete set of 40 Volumes collected in a zip file (666kb), available upon request.

Enjoy!

The Stackz Wordlists / Kanji Study Set
« on: June 10, 2006, 05:18:26 PM »
Greetings fellow Stackz users!

Last year over the course of a few months, using kanjibrowse utilities I created a study set for the complete jouyou kanji list.? The set consists of 39 files of 50 lessons each (45 in the last).? Each lesson contains all the vocabulary tagged common usage by edict for that particular kanji.? As well, I created a supplementary file for vocabulary containing non-jouyou kanji that are also tagged common usage.? I did this by manually individually analyzing about 7000 kanji and collecting the vocabulary results produced by the dictionary.? In total I'd estimate there are about 20000 words separated into individual kanji vocabulary lessons.

I'm very pleased with how this project turned out, and use it frequently.? My main goal when creating this, was to have a system where I could either focus on one kanji at a time, or many if I wanted.? I limited the lessons to words tagged common usage to keep the file size manageable and practical.? Currently I don't have the files uploaded anywhere, but if anybody is also interested in using these files, feel free to message me your email address, and I can send the set to you in a zip file.? Also, MindDate staff is welcome to host the set for public usage if they are interested in doing so.

Best to you all with your studies.

PocketStackz - New Feature Requests / Re: New features?
« on: June 09, 2006, 01:04:02 PM »
One nice thing about Pocket Stackz is that you can easily edit a card from the test dialogue.  I was thinking that it would be handy also to have an option to delete the card altogether from there.  That way it would be easy to get rid of erroneous or unwanted cards as you come across them, instead of going into the edit dialogue and trying to find a card you want to delete.  This can be tedious because some stackz can be rather huge.

I was thinking about this as I working with the Tanaka Corpus file kindly provided by Pawel.  As is common knowledge there are errors in the file, and I was editting some of the incorrect English as I went along.  Something you can't do in PC Stackz.  However, some of them are totally incorrect or simply not worth saving, so I figured this would be a useful and easy to add function.

Nice work Pawel!? 久し振りですね。

I make heavy use of the Tanaka Corpus myself.

As I mentioned previously somewhere else on this board, I'd like to see Stackz integrated with an example sentence database, so that a person could readily put new vocabulary into context.? For now, a quick copy and paste from the test dialogue and into Jim Breen's search program works fairly well, but having a button to automate the process would be ideal.

KanjiBrowze / Re: Japanese Places Dictionary File
« on: May 30, 2006, 07:00:22 PM »
I never was able to extract those .gz files on Windows XP.  I believe I tried seven different utilities including SpeedCommander without success.
However, purchasing an iMac solved this, because the files extract without a problem on OSX.  From there I simply copied the file to the Windows partition so I could use it with Stackz.

KanjiBrowze / Japanese Places Dictionary File
« on: April 20, 2006, 11:23:26 AM »
I'd like to utilize the J_Places dictionary file in Kanjibrowze, but I can't seem to find a way to extract the .gz file into a usable format on Windows XP.   I've tried four different utilities (including Gunzip and Winzip) to try and do this, but still no success.

Anybody know how to get this to work?

PocketStackz / Re: Where do you use PocketStackz?
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:34:21 AM »

For me, Pocketstackz is the best thing invented since...er...PC Stackz!

I have that PPC with me almost everywhere I go so I use it every instance that I'll be waiting around for something.  Like the laundry, or at a restaurant.  I drive everywhere I go so I obviously can't use it then, but if I did use the bus or train, I'm sure I'd have it out then.

General Discussion / Re: Do you still use paper flashcards?

I gave up paper flashcards when I bought my computer in 1999.? I don't think I'd ever go back to that now.

Stackz - Solved Issues / Example Sentences
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:20:10 AM »

What I would really love to see, is a function that utilizes Jim Breen's example sentence database.  So often, when I'm learning vocab with Stackz I want to be able to put the new word into context.  Right now, I do a quick copy and paste from the test dialogue and into the website, but it would be really handy to have a button which did this itself, either stand-alone or integrated online.

One thing about learning vocabulary, it's great but not all that useful unless you have the grammar skill and context understanding to put the word into practice.

This is my suggestion.

The Stackz Wordlists / Re: What wordlist is missing most?
« on: January 25, 2006, 07:21:03 PM »
Here's a few ideas to start:

-Geographic Areas and Place names,? like prefectures and major cities, etc.? I made a small one of just the prefectures but that's as far as I got.

-A list of Kansai-ben terms

-Common colloquial and slang words or expressions

All very useful info
